Burlington Code Academy student project

The very first class of students just graduated from the Burlington Code Academy this past August. As a final project, students worked in groups of five to tackle a project that sparked their interest. Five students (pictured above from left to right: Sean Stone, Jake Styles, Jake Goss, Christopher Griffin) worked together to build a dashboard in Firebase for the Green Up App. The idea behind building a dashboard, along with putting all the new skills that they learned in this 12-week-intensive program, was to have something that town administrators could use to look at the data gathered through the Green Up App. On mobile screens, it is a jumble of tightly overlaid pins. The dashboard focuses on displaying the data gathered cleanly and creating a simple user experience. It draws in people who have a preference for laptops over smart phones. Nick Floersch of Code for BTV was the catalyst in bringing this project idea to their attention. He knew the parameters of the project needed to be small because the students only had three weeks to accomplish it, but he also knew that whatever the students designed would be a starting point which could be added on to later on.

The students presented their project at Demo Night, on the eve of their graduation. There were five presentations, all of which were really interesting! The students did a great job explaining project. You can view their full presentation via youtube: https://youtu.be/srhekVQr4iI

The event was catered and was held at the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies, a beautiful, open and modern space.

They posted these words of thanks on their Facebook page:

On Thursday August 23rd, Burlington Code Academy students displayed the culmination of their hard work by demoing their capstone projects to an audience of hiring partners, loved ones, and the VT tech community.

“A mighty thank you to Vermont Senate President Tim Ashe for speaking at our event in support of Burlington Code Academy, and to Vermont Representative Dylan Giambatista for attending.

Countless appreciations to those who made this night possible, starting with the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies for hosting Demo Day and giving us their continuous support. Thanks to LaunchVT for propelling BCA to new heights through mentorship and in-kind service providers who we now have the pleasure of working with (Renaissance Information Systems, Qwerkal, Dale Carnegie Training Vermont, Gallagher Flynn & Company, LLP Merritt & Merritt).

Huge thank you to our project sponsors, the local organizations who guided students through their capstone development process (UVM Medical Center, Code for BTV, Green Up Vermont, Varesis, New Grass Roots).
